BSV
🌸 BreastScreen Victoria: Comprehensive KM Guidance
1. Appointment Logistics & Timing
-
Duration: Appointments are strictly scheduled for 10 minutes. This includes the time to check in, change, and have the mammogram.
-
Booking Eligibility: * Target Group: Women and gender-diverse people aged 50–74 (highest risk group).
-
Open Access: Available from age 40 and over 75.
-
-
Frequency: Generally recommended every 2 years.
2. The Screening Procedure (Mammogram)
-
Technology: Uses Digital Mammography (low-dose X-ray).
-
The Radiographer: * Gender: BSV guarantees all-female staff for clinical procedures to ensure privacy and comfort.
-
Role: They are specialists trained to position the breast to capture the maximum amount of tissue.
-
-
Compression (The "Firm Pressure"):
-
The Why: The breast must be compressed to flatten the tissue. This reduces the X-ray dose and prevents "blurring," ensuring that even tiny cancers (the size of a grain of salt) are visible.
-
Pain vs. Discomfort: Agents should describe this as "firm pressure" or "temporary discomfort." * Duration of Sensation: The actual compression lasts only 5 to 10 seconds per image (usually two images per breast).
-
3. Managing Client Anxiety & Sensitivity
-
Nervous Clients: Agents must acknowledge that anxiety is a standard barrier to screening.
-
Control: Clients are informed they have total control. If the discomfort is too much, they can ask the radiographer to stop or pause at any second.
-
Accessibility:
-
Interpreters: Free phone or on-site interpreters can be booked.
-
Disability Support: Clinics are equipped for those with mobility aids or wheelchairs.
-
4. Results, GP Integration, and Callbacks
-
The Result Timeline:
-
Standard: Results are mailed via Australia Post within 2 to 4 weeks.
-
GP Notification: If a client nominates a GP, the doctor receives a digital or paper copy simultaneously to ensure the result is added to the client’s permanent medical record.
-
-
Assessment Clinics (The "Callback"):
-
Statistics: Approximately 5 in every 100 people are called back for more tests.
-
Purpose: Usually to get a clearer view of an area that looked "busy" on the screen (often due to dense breast tissue or overlapping shadows).
-
Reassurance Logic: An AI Agent must emphasize that most people called back do NOT have cancer. It is a safety check to be 100% sure.
-
5. Clinic Locations
-
Permanent Clinics: High-volume centers like Carlton, Geelong, and regional hubs.
-
Mobile Screening Vans: The "Pink Vans" travel across Victoria to provide access to rural and remote communities on a rotating schedule.
