Safe Implants

If it's not on this list, documentation is required.  Implants not listed below must be approved prior to scheduling.

(Always be sure to document what the patient has!)

  • Heart stents: as long they have been in for 6 weeks (per Dr. Olofsson and Dr. Marlow). If the patient knows the type of stent, try to obtain and document the information. (brand/manufacturer, implant date, physician)
    • *** We can now schedule Heart Stents on the OPEN MAGNET @ AC ***
  • Orthopedic Hardware: Screws/Rods/anchors/pins/etc. implanted by an orthopedic surgeon are generally safe if they have been in place for 6 weeks
  • IUDs are generally fine for MRI but some have restrictions. Please obtain the brand/manufacturer and document it in the notes. ***For any IUDs that we have not encountered, please send implant triage an email so that it can be researched**
    • The following IUDs are SAFE for MRI 3T or 1.5T: Mirena, Kyleena, Skyla, Nexplanon, Essure, Liletta, Paragard
    • The following IUD is SAFE for MRI 1.5T only (no 3T): _________
  • Hernia Mesh (6 weeks)
  • Breast clips (markers)
  • Bladder slings (6 weeks)
