Certificate of title explained
Applies to: customers asking what a certificate of title is and what it shows.
Overview
A certificate of title is the official record of who owns a parcel of land in Western Australia. WA uses an electronic register, so there is no longer a paper title issued for most properties.
What it shows
- The registered owner or owners and how they hold the land (for example as joint tenants).
- The land description: Lot number, plan or diagram, Volume and Folio.
- Interests registered on the title, such as mortgages, easements and caveats.
Common questions
- Is the title the same as a title search? A title search is a copy of the current register entry. It is the standard way to see what the certificate of title records.
- Can I get a paper title? Only in limited cases. Refer the caller to Titles Registration.
- A name is wrong on the title. This needs a lodged document. Escalate to Titles Registration.
